Hot weather can make travelling to work extremely uncomfortable, especially when taking public transport. It is important to be prepared ahead of time so you are not left suffering on a hot tube. Here are our 5 key strategies for coping with the heat.
1 - Life is better with a breeze. Which is why, on a hot day we recommend travelling above ground when possible. Swap the stuffy air of the tube for the open skies and a stream of cool air on an e-bike. Not possible? A seat by the window on the Overground or a bus works too.
2 - Cool your water. We all know that staying hydrated during a heatwave is key but quench your thirst and cool your body by freezing a bottle overnight. This allows your water to stay cooler for longer but also doubles as a cold press. Dab the cold bottle on your wrists and neck to stay cooler for longer. But remember - water expands when freezing so only fill your bottle up ¾ full.
3 - Dress with intent. Loose, light fitting clothing is best for hot weather. Linen works well but a great alternative is to travel in your sports clothing as it’s designed to be light and breathable. This will help you on your way to a much more comfortable commute.
4 - Find the shade. As nice as it is when the sun comes out, the difference in temperature between sun and shade can make all the difference. Staying cool can be as simple as swapping to the shady side of the pavement or walking through the park under the cover of some trees.
5 - Stay fresh with fruit. Certain fruits such as watermelon and cucumbers have a hydrating effect (Who knew cucumbers were a fruit, ey?). Incorporating these into your diet during warmer weather can help you to stay hydrated and feel refreshed on your journey or throughout the day. You can also try freezing a bunch of grapes for the perfect mid-commute snack.
Don’t let the summer heat dampen your commute. By implementing these strategies and following our tips you can stay cool and comfortable throughout your journey.
